If your child has been labeled with ADHD, anxiety, or learning delays, don’t stop at the diagnosis. Let’s look deeper.

This article is the last in our four-part blog series “Radical Responsibility: A Functional Nutrition Approach to Student Health and Success,“. In this article we discuss a functional, root cause and root healing approach to childrens cognitive, emotional and neurological health. If you didn’t catch the first part of the series, check it out!

You’ve heard the labels: ADHD. Anxiety. Learning delays. Perhaps your child already has one, and you’ve been told that medication is the only path forward. But deep down, you wonder… Why is my child struggling in the first place?

At in2GREAT, we believe every symptom is a clue, not a destiny. And when you follow the clues far enough, you often find that your child’s brain isn’t broken — it’s reacting and reacting to a world that’s changed faster than their biology can keep up.

What If the Diagnosis Isn’t the Whole Story? Looking Beneath the Labels

If your child has been labeled with ADHD, anxiety, or a learning disability, it’s easy to feel like the label is the whole story — and that medication is the only next step. But in functional medicine, we see that label as just the beginning of the conversation.

The truth is, kids today are growing up in a world that’s biologically different than the one we knew.

They’re surrounded by screens that hijack attention, EMFs and toxins that didn’t exist a generation ago, processed foods that starve their brains of nutrients, less sunshine, less movement, and less connection to nature. Their bodies — and their brains — are trying to function in an environment that is constantly pushing them toward imbalance.

When a child is struggling to focus, control impulses, or keep up academically, it’s rarely just “who they are.” It’s often the result of multiple minor stressors piling up in their system until their brain can’t keep up. That’s why we don’t just “treat ADHD” or “manage anxiety.” We ask bigger questions:

  • What’s driving the inflammation in this child’s brain?
  • What nutrient gaps are affecting their focus and mood regulation?
  • How is their gut microbiome shaping their behavior?
  • Is their methylation balance sabotaging neurotransmitter function?
  • What role are toxins, technology, and nature deprivation playing in their mental health?

Because here’s the truth, when you start answering those questions and changing the inputs, kids don’t just cope better. They thrive.

Here’s what that looks like.

The Real Reasons Behind ADHD, Anxiety, and Learning Delays

From a functional medicine and nutrition perspective, ADHD, anxiety, and learning issues are rarely due to a single cause. Instead, they’re often the result of:

Genetic Tendencies + Epigenetic Triggers

Genes are not destiny. They’re more like light switches that can be turned on or off depending on the environment. Some kids are born with a more sensitive blueprint for handling stress, detoxifying chemicals, or producing neurotransmitters. But it’s their exposures; diet, toxins, stress, infections that decide how those genes play out. This is why two kids in the same family can have completely different responses to the same environment.

Impaired or Over-Methylation

Methylation is one of the body’s master control processes. It influences everything from detox to mood-regulating neurotransmitters.

When methylation runs too slow (undermethylation), kids may be anxious, rigid, or prone to depression. When it runs too fast (overmethylation), they can exhibit emotional, hyperactive, or hypersensitive behaviors to sound and light. Either extreme can throw the brain off balance and create symptoms that look like ADHD, mood swings, or even sensory processing disorders.

Neuroinflammation and Toxic Exposures

The brain has its own immune system, and when it’s triggered by mold toxins, pesticides, heavy metals, lingering infections, or even certain foods, it can spark chronic inflammation within the nervous system—what some call a brain “on fire” (or, in some cases, “on ice”). This inflammation changes brain chemistry and disrupts how nerve cells communicate, leading to cognitive and emotional struggles.

In children, these changes can show up as:

  • Brain fog
  • Phobias or new fears
  • Fatigue
  • Short-term memory issues
  • Obsessive thoughts or behaviors
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

At the root of these symptoms is often a cytokine storm—an overproduction of inflammatory chemicals inside the brain and central nervous system. This storm can damage key brain regions, such as the anterior hypothalamus, which plays a critical role in hormone regulation. When this area is impaired, MSH (melanocyte-stimulating hormone) levels drop. MSH is a neuropeptide that helps regulate melatonin (for sleep) and endorphins (for pain and mood). Low MSH can mean poor sleep, more pain sensitivity, and a harder time maintaining emotional balance.

MSH is also vital for maintaining the tight junctions in the gut lining. When it drops, the gut can stay “leaky,” allowing toxins and inflammatory molecules to enter the bloodstream and perpetuate the brain’s inflammatory cycle. Reducing neuroinflammation is essential for protecting a child’s mood, focus, and long-term brain health.

Nutrient Deficiencies

You can’t build a healthy brain out of processed food. Even in homes where kids eat “enough,” their brains may be starving for omega-3 fats, protein/ amino acids, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, B vitamins, Choline and more. Without these, neurons can’t fire efficiently, neurotransmitters go out of balance, and brain energy drops, all of which directly affect learning and behavior.

Blood Sugar Instability

Blood sugar swings aren’t just about energy highs and lows, they’re about brain chemistry, hormone regulation, and long-term neurological health. Every time a child’s blood sugar drops too quickly, the body releases a surge of stress hormones, primarily cortisol and adrenaline to stabilize it. While this is a normal survival mechanism, frequent spikes and crashes can keep a child’s nervous system in a constant “fight-or-flight” mode. The result? Anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating.

This problem is fueled not only by obvious added sugars and artificial sweeteners, but also by excessive refined carbohydrates, think crackers, granola bars, pasta, and even “healthy” breakfast cereals. The brain is a hybrid engine designed to run on both glucose and ketones, but most modern diets lock it into glucose dependence. When a child’s meals and snacks are dominated by quick-burning carbs, blood sugar spikes sharply and then plummets, creating the same rollercoaster pattern all day long.

These rapid highs and lows don’t just cause energy crashes, they can impair the brain’s ability to maintain steady neurotransmitter production, disrupt learning, and weaken emotional regulation. Over time, this instability can contribute to insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and increased risk for mood disorders.

Gut-Brain Axis Dysfunction

Your child’s gut and brain are in constant conversation; they are connected by a two-way “highway” called the vagus nerve. If the gut microbiome is imbalanced, inflamed, or dealing with food sensitivities, it can send distress signals straight to the brain. This can lead to more meltdowns, increased brain fog, and reduced stress management. It’s not a coincidence that many kids with behavioral or learning challenges also have chronic digestive complaints.

Mitochondrial Fatigue & the Cell Danger Response

Every cell in your child’s body — including brain cells — is powered by tiny energy plants called mitochondria. One of their primary goals is to use nutrients and turn them into cellular energy, called ATP. In a healthy state, these mitochondria are in their M2 shape, producing steady, clean energy so the brain can focus, learn, and regulate emotions.

But when the body senses a threat, like toxins, chronic infections, mold, or heavy metals, mitochondria can switch into M1 “battleship mode.” In this mode, cell membranes become rigid and less permeable, mitochondria slow down energy production, and the brain can’t produce enough energy to learn, process, and focus. It’s a smart short-term survival strategy, but here’s the problem: sometimes the mitochondria get stuck in battleship mode.

When that happens across millions of cells, kids can feel mentally foggy, emotionally flat, or too drained to focus. Schoolwork becomes harder, frustration tolerance drops, and they may seem “checked out” or unmotivated — not because they don’t care, but because their brain doesn’t have the power supply it needs.

At in2GREAT, one of our foundational goals is to understand what triggered the mitochondria to enter “battleship mode” and help guide them back to M2 “energy plant mode” so the brain can run at full capacity again.

Impaired Glymphatic Drainage

The brain has its own detox system, called the glymphatic system, that clears out waste, toxins, and inflammatory byproducts, and it works best during deep sleep. When kids aren’t sleeping soundly (or long enough), this system can’t keep up. Over time, waste builds up, creating brain fog, irritability, and slower processing.

Add in environmental toxins, mold exposure, or chronic inflammation, and the glymphatic “drain” can get even more clogged. In kids, this can look like constant fatigue, headaches, trouble learning new material, moodiness and more.

Technology Overexposure

Screens and technology are no longer just for fun, they’re for education too. Kids aren’t just playing games once in a while; they’re also doing homework, research, and even classroom assignments on their devices. This means their total screen time has skyrocketed, and so have the downstream effects screens have on our children’s brains.

Constant digital stimulation rewires dopamine signaling in the brain, making it harder for kids to focus on anything less stimulating than what’s happening on the screen. Excessive screen time is impacting kids’ ability to have real, face-to-face conversations. Blue light exposure and constant device use reduce opportunities for one-on-one, eye-to-eye connections — meaningful interactions that teach kids how to read emotions, build empathy, and feel secure in relationships.

Bluelight can also disrupt sleep, which is non-negotiable for memory, mood regulation, and brain repair.

When we combine overstimulation, sleep disruption, and a loss of real-world social connection, we’re left with kids who are more anxious, less focused, and less resilient, all of which show up in the classroom and beyond.

Disconnection from Nature

Kids today are spending less time outside than prisoners in maximum security. Nature is a natural reset button for the nervous system. Sunshine boosts vitamin D and serotonin. Movement outdoors regulates the circadian rhythm. Even small amounts of time outdoors can help lower cortisol and inflammation. Being outdoors, connecting with nature, is part of how humans evolved; it is in our primal ancestry.

Lack of Real Food, Real Sleep, and Real Movement

No supplement, therapy, or medication can replace these foundations. Kids need nutrient-dense whole foods, consistent deep sleep, and daily movement to keep their brains in balance. Without these basics, even the best interventions will only go so far. Check out our previous blog to learn more about how a nutrient-dense, non-processed, real food diet can support your child’s brain health, cognitive function and even emotional balance.

The rise in ADHD, anxiety, and learning challenges isn’t a mystery — it’s the natural outcome of a modern environment that’s out of sync with what a developing brain needs. These issues are often missed in conventional evaluations because most doctors don’t look deep enough or wide enough.

The good news? Kids are resilient, and the body is intelligent; it doesn’t make mistakes, it simply responds to the stressors it is put under, AND the body is designed to heal. When we change the environment and address the root causes, kids often bounce back and thrive!

How in2GREAT Gets to the Root: Functional Medicine Testing and Care Plans for Kids with ADHD, Anxiety, or Learning Challenges

At in2GREAT, we take a radically different approach. An approach that goes beyond merely managing symptoms; it’s not just about naming and labeling them with a diagnosis. As functional nutrition and functional medicine practitioners, we refuse to settle for “managing” symptoms or throwing quick fixes at them. We aim to understand the root causes, the why behind the symptoms. We slow down, investigate, and uncover what’s really driving their struggles and address them comprehensively with functional nutrition and medicine. At in2GREAT we take a different approach:

We don’t just ask “What’s wrong?”,  we ask “Why is this happening?”

We don’t just prescribe, we teach, guide, and walk with you.

We don’t settle for symptom management; we aim for physiological transformation.

We listen. We track patterns over time. And we pivot when needed, because each child is unique, their needs are different, their needs and goals change, and so should their care.

Functional Lab Testing

We hear it every day: patients are told “everything looks fine” while they’re still struggling. This goes for children, too. Conventional lab work often skims the surface; we cast a bigger net and go deeper.

We test so we don’t guess, and so we can have targeted solutions. We may assess:

  • Nutrient status: iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, choline, vitamin D, omega-3s, B12/folate
  • Gut health: microbiome balance, inflammation, pathogens, digestive function, and leaky gut markers
  • Toxic burden: heavy metals, mold, mycotoxins, glyphosate, plastics
  • Immune activation:  autoimmunity, chronic infections like Strep A, MARCoNS, EBV, CMV
  • Neurotransmitters
  • Hormones & Stress markers: in younger kids, we’re not usually looking at sex hormones unless they’re teens, but we do assess adrenal hormones like cortisol, brain–hormone signals such as TSH, ACTH, and aMSH, and thyroid hormones
  • Methylation & other important genetic variants: such as MTHFR, VDR, MAOA, COMT, PEMT
  • Mitochondrial function & Cell Danger Response: are their energy plants stuck in battleship mode?
