In the news, pretty much everywhere this month, was a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences about microplastics in our water, which has made its way into bottled water – especially plastic bottles.

Previous studies had detected the existence of micro-and nanoplastics in 93% of samples of bottled water sold by 11 different brands in 9 countries (unfortunately, the study didn’t identify the brands). But until now, they hadn’t had a way to analyze the water to identify the true number of particles.

Scarily, the new study reports bottled water can contain 10 to 100 times more plastic nanoparticles than estimated in the earlier study. These minuscule plastic particles can invade cells and tissues in major organs. This can interrupt cellular processes and also deposit chemicals and heavy metals, leading to the development of major health issues if not addressed.

%

Microplastics have been detected in the human blood of 80% of people tested… In 11 out of 13 sampled surgery patients… up to 121,000 microparticles per year for an adult. Plastic is everywhere. It breaks down and finds its way into our bodies.

So what do we take from this?

A lot of things, but here are just a few:

Water consumption

Stop drinking water from plastic. Add to this, our recommendation of distilling water at your home. This is the most effective way to eliminate toxins from our drinking water. Detoxification

We all need to make sure our drainage pathways are functioning properly, and we’re doing everything we should be to support our bodies detoxification process. This means what we eat, supportive supplements and therapies, and exercising to (among many other things) help us to sweat out the toxins.

Products we use

Use clean household and personal products. We’re already constantly being exposed to toxins on a daily basis. Choosing to use and wear products without toxins is an easy thing you can do to help manage your toxic load. Everything we can do to help our bodies, helps our overall health and natural detoxification process.

Digestion

Make sure our digestive system is functioning properly. It plays a very important role in detoxification.

And finally, this study further hammers home the importance of working with a health practice who helps patients prevent health issues from developing and properly address issues that do develop to restore their health. Conventional medicine doesn’t do this. We believe functional medicine is the best approach because the practice of this discipline is focused on identifying the root cause of disease. Many times, the root cause is our toxin load. Once that’s identified as the root issue, we develop personalized protocols with customized supplement strategies and integrative therapies to help your body eliminate the toxins and begin functioning properly again.
